Cave Creek's Art Season Moves Off the Street This Fall

October 22, 2026

Small colored flags have started showing up on the trees and cacti in the Carefree Desert Gardens. According to the Town of Carefree, they mark where holiday lights will be strung. Crews are also replacing the Easy Street string lights in Town Center. On Nov. 7 and 8, the same four acres will also host about 100 juried artists. That's because Carefree's fall art festival has left the street for the first time in its 33 years.

The festival's move sums up the whole season. From Oct. 23 through Thanksgiving weekend, the four main Cave Creek and Carefree art events happens in a shopping plaza, a visitor center, a botanical garden and dozens of private studios. No street closes for any of it. Here's how the four art events line up, in order.

This Weekend: Stagecoach Village

The season starts Friday with the 17th annual Stagecoach Village Fine Art & Wine Festival, Oct. 23 to 25, at 7100 E. Cave Creek Rd. Vermillion Promotions lists hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with free admission and free parking. You'll find painting, sculpture, bronze, ceramics, glass, jewelry, photography, mixed media and wearable art. The event's artist application describes more than 100 juried artists, plus wine tasting, craft beer, food vendors and live music. As of early October, the producer said the wineries, featured artists and performers would be announced as they're confirmed, so check the event page before you go.

If you plan to taste, the day you pick changes the price. Each package comes with a commemorative glass:

  • Friday: $15 for five tastings, $25 for ten
  • Saturday: $25 for five tastings, $35 for ten
  • Sunday: $20 for five tastings, $30 for ten

Friday costs $10 less than Saturday for the same pour count. Ten tastings on Friday cost the same as five on Saturday.

Stagecoach Village matters past this one weekend, too. The Sonoran Arts League runs its studio and classroom hub at the same address, in Suite 144. The League also runs Hidden in the Hills, the last of the four big events, a month later. So the plaza where the season opens is home base for the group that runs its biggest closing event.

The same weekend has two family-friendly events. The Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber calendar lists a YMCA Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oct. 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. Fall Carefree Restaurant Week runs through Sunday, Oct. 25.

A Smaller Gallery Most People Drive Past

Two weeks later comes the smallest art event of the season. The Cave Creek Visitor Center at 6528 E. Cave Creek Rd. holds a Mini-Gallery Open House on Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. The center's mini gallery holds 24 works by local artists. Eight of them are part of the Sonoran Arts League's Art in Public Places program. Local artists will be on hand, and refreshments will be served.

The Town of Cave Creek's announcement also says the visitor center is back on full-time hours. It's open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. Along with the art, it has desert plant and wildlife displays, local history exhibits, trail maps, a Little Free Library and free Arizona road maps. Together with the Cave Creek Museum, it's a base for the Local Landmarks passport program. If you have house guests coming for the holidays, it's an easy first stop on a weekday morning.

Carefree's Festival Moves Into the Gardens

The biggest change this season comes the next morning. Thunderbird Artists has produced its fall show in downtown Carefree for 32 years. The Town asked to limit street closures to two per year, so Thunderbird Artists moved the fall festival into the Carefree Desert Gardens. Its Winter and Spring street festivals stay downtown as before.

The new event has a new name, too. The 33rd annual Fall Carefree Garden Art Experience runs Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 101 Easy St. Admission is free. Thunderbird calls it the Town of Carefree Signature Event. The gardens cover four acres, with water features, fountains, sculptures already in place and the 62-foot Carefree Sundial.

The layout will be different from past years. "This fall we're unveiling a completely open layout, no fences, so patrons can freely explore the entire festival," Thunderbird Artists president Denise Colter told the Cave Creek/Carefree Independent. The paper reports that more than 100 juried artists from 15 Arizona cities and 13 states will set up along the gardens' paths. Parking is free.

Here's what the Independent says to expect:

  1. Featured artists: Sheko Kirby and Sarkis Choulijian, who have made sculptural jewelry together as Nyeari since 2015
  2. Music: Soul Groove plays Motown, R&B, disco and classic soul at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion all weekend, and steel drummer Paul McDermand makes a special appearance Saturday
  3. Food: The Dog Father, with hot dogs, burgers and sausages, and Xavier's Crepes, with sweet and savory crepes
  4. Drinks: wine, spirits and microbrews for sampling near the stage

Thunderbird sells a souvenir wine glass with tasting tickets for $30, with cash preferred. A package for two costs $55 and includes two glasses and 20 tasting tickets, a $5 savings. That's in the same range as Stagecoach Village's Saturday pricing.

There's also some overlap to keep in mind. The flags going up in the gardens now mark where holiday lights will hang this season. At its October meeting, the Carefree Town Council voted to hire a local vendor to install and remove the Town's holiday lights and decorations. Public Works staff used to handle it. So the same garden will host fall art in early November and the holiday displays after that.

The same weekend is busy elsewhere, too. The Chamber calendar lists the Turquoise Circuit Pro Rodeo from Nov. 5 to 7.

The Big Four Ends in Private Studios

The last of the four is the most spread out. The Sonoran Arts League's Hidden in the Hills studio tour is free and self-guided over six days. It visits private studios in Cave Creek, Carefree and north Scottsdale. This year's tour is the 30th. The Cave Creek/Carefree Independent reports 151 artists at 38 studios, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 20 to 22 and Nov. 27 to 29. Painter Jeanne Bonine's "Welcome to My World" was chosen for the tour directory's cover.

With 151 artists at 38 studios, the tour averages about four artists per stop. Many stops are shared workspaces, not single-artist studios. The second weekend falls right after Thanksgiving, which is Thursday, Nov. 26 this year. That makes it an easy outing if you're hosting family who want to see the foothills from more than the car window. That Saturday, Nov. 28, the Chamber calendar also lists Kiwanis Christmas for the Kids from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What's Opening Between the Art Weekends

New shops on Cave Creek Road are opening on the same quiet schedule. The Chamber held a grand-opening ribbon cutting for Freeborn Marketplace on Sept. 29 at 6268 E. Cave Creek Rd., Suite 4. Twisted Stitches has its grand-opening ribbon cutting on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6554 E. Cave Creek Rd., per the Chamber listing.

The bigger commercial project is still a while off. The Town of Cave Creek says Black Mountain Marketplace is taking shape on 13 acres at the southeast corner of Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway. The Town says several retail and restaurant tenants are negotiating to join, and its announcement names no tenants and gives no opening date. It also says native cacti and trees were salvaged from the site for replanting there. The City of Phoenix will supply water to development south of Carefree Highway. Several acres of residential-zoned land on Black Mountain were bought and kept as open space under a Transfer of Density. For now, anyone driving that corner this fall is passing a construction site, not a shopping center.

The Rest of the Fall Calendar

All of these come from the Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber calendar:

  • Oct. 31: Prickly Pear Festival, 9 a.m. to noon
  • Nov. 13 and 14: Our Lady of Joy Christmas Bazaar, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Dec. 4 and 5: Winter Artisan Gift Market, with more details still to come
  • Dec. 5 to 11: Chanukah in Carefree, nightly from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The Winter Artisan Gift Market follows Hidden in the Hills by just a week, so art and gift shopping keeps going in early December.
